Several of my clients have had their personal identity information stolen and a false tax return was filed in their name. This is disconcerting and there is a sense of personal violation.
When this happens the IRS requires the filing of a paper return, which takes longer to process and to issue a refund. The best way to avoid this is to get an IRS identity pin. With your personal identity pin, only you can file the tax return.
The first step in getting your IRS identity pin, is to sign up for an on-line account with IRS. Most people use ID.me. I have used this to create my own account. It goes through a process of verifying your personal identity. With your personal online account, you can also do some other very useful things.
